🔩 The Tuesday Tip: Off the Clock, But Still Learning

After a long day, the last thing you want to do is fight with your kid about reading a book.

But here’s a literacy secret: just letting your kids hear stories builds their brainpower for all their school subjects, from science to social studies.

It helps children learn new words that help them understand what the teachers are talking about when they return to school.

The Free Resource: Check out https://storylineonline.net/ (it's totally free).

It features famous actors and people reading children’s books out loud with cool animations.

Put it on the tablet or TV while you’re unwinding from work, or watch it together and talk about the pictures or things in the book that puzzle you or make you laugh.

Plus, they get a story, you get a breather, and their brain gets a workout.

Strong readers = strong schools!

🔩 The Tuesday Tip: The Right Tool for the Job

When you’re trying to fix something, having the right tool makes the job take half the time.

It’s the same with helping our children learn to read.

Reading isn't just about passing English class.

It’s the tool they use to understand history, follow science projects, and solve math problems.

When reading clicks, their confidence in every subject at school shoots up.

The Free Resources: Download the free Duolingo ABC or Khan Academy Kids app on your phone or your student's phone.

These Apps are completely free, have zero ads, and turn reading practice into a wholesome video game for ages 2 - 8.

Here are the links:

https://abc.duolingo.com/

https://www.khanacademy.org/kids

If your student is older, consider setting up a free account on Khan Academy - you can create a parent account and then add your student, or your student can do it totally on their own.

Here is the link (also totally free!)

https://www.khanacademy.org/

Let your elementary student play on the Duolingo ABC App or Khan Academy Kids App for 10 minutes while you're cooking dinner or driving home.

For older students, encourage them to read for 10-15 minutes on most days (any book!) or try Khan Academy if they could a reading help refresher.

No worksheets, no fights, just 10 minutes of reading on most days of building a stronger foundation.

Strong readers = strong schools!

Weekly Wellness Tip
🔩 The Tuesday Tip: Reading is the Engine

Ever wonder why teachers push reading so hard, even when your kid is struggling with math or science?

Think of reading like the engine of a truck.

If the engine isn't running right, it doesn't matter how good the tires or the transmission are—the truck isn't moving.

In school, your child has to read the math word problems and the science lab instructions. If they can read confidently, every other subject gets easier.

The Resource: Our local Pember public library in Granville is 100% free.

You don't need a dime to walk in, get a card, and let your kid pick out a couple of books about things they already like—whether that's trucks, animals, or sports. And yes, graphic novels count!

Try going once a week (looking at the pictures in a book is a great start and returning them unread, it totally okay!). Or try going once a month! Keep a library tote bag by the door to return them easily.

The best tool for school success doesn't cost a thing. Stop by the Pember Library this week!

Strong Readers = Strong Schools!

Congratulations to the PTO Staff of the Month for May and June 2026!

At MJT, we celebrate Mrs. Nichole Stewart, Kindergarten Teacher and Ms. Tara Watson, Teacher's Aide in Special Education!

This is Mrs. Stewart's first year in our district, but she has many years of experience with young learners. Her students have shown exceptional growth this year, both socially and academically. Mrs. Stewart provides fun and engaging activities and does an exceptional job monitoring student growth and achievement. Thank you for what you do for our students!
- Principal Taylor

Ms. Watson is such an asset to our special education program! She exemplifies what it means to be a caring and compassionate educator. She displays positivity at all times, even when the day can bring obstacles and challenges. Ms. Watson handles every situation with grace, and puts students dignity and well-being above all else.
- Principal Taylor

At GES, we celebrate, Ms. Stacia Bonanno, Special Education Teacher, and Ms. Linda Law, Long-term Substitute Teacher and Gardening Expert and After School Gardening Leader

Ms. Bonanno is a wonderful special education teacher at GES! This school year, she was one of the GES teacher-volunteers to participate in a teacher-training program and brought wisdom to GES about nervous system regulation in the classroom. Thank you Ms. Bonanno! - Principal Ten Eyck

Ms. Law is a "education rockstar" and can always be counted on to help our classrooms and school. This school year Ms. Law has brought new life to GES by reigniting the After School Gardening that is so popular with students it is full with two afternoons per week!
This gives our students an opportunity to learn about food, gardening and caring for plants and so much more. Thank you Ms. Law! - Principal Ten Eyck

At the Jr/Sr High we celebrate Ms. Elizabeth Mulvaney, School Counselor for Grades 7/8 and Ms. Megan Olsen, Special Education Teacher and Color Guard Mentor, Marching Band

Liz has the biggest heart, strongest shoulders, kindest hands, and loving hands. Her commitment to our kids is fantastic. The students LOVE her and know she will always have a kind word and firm suggestions to help them have a better day. We are all blessed to have her on our team!- Staff Member

Megan ALWAYS goes above and beyond for staff members and for students. Some of the hardest behaviors to "unlock" in class, Megan finds the key. I am so impressed with her dedication, perspective, and optimism about kids, education and lesson planning. I wish everyone had a Megan in their life. I think the world- our little weird, oddly sweet, and oftentimes gut wrenching Granvillian Middle and High School world would be better for it. - Staff Member

Thank you Team Horde! And thank you to the PTO and Indulge Pizza for helping us appreciate and acknowledge our staff.

We are tracking potential severe weather for this afternoon and are in contact with Washington County emergency officials. If severe weather occurs during dismissal, we may delay student release at all buildings by 15–20 minutes to keep everyone safely indoors. We will send a follow-up alert if a delay is officially called. Thank you for helping us keep our students and staff safe.
